Quick update, 2/5

A song and a smile; by request, Bucky Covington on stage in New Jersey, 7/06, photo by the very talented DeniseBernadette. You can pre-order Bucky's debut CD at Amazon, Best Buy and Target, hear the full version of his single "A Different World" at CMT, or enjoy samples of four songs from the CD at Bucky's official MySpace. Thanks for writing!

So close! Bucky's debut single is in the process of crossing all-important that Top 40 line--and our requests are going to play a big role in getting it there. If you haven't requested "A Different World" at your local and/or favorite online stations before, this week is the perfect time to start.

Scroll down to the "everything you always wanted to know" post to find out how and why your calls and emails are vital--and then pick up the phone or open up that email program and politely let your favorite DJ know you'd like to hear Bucky coming through your speakers. (Remember that wonderful rush when Bucky made the Top 10--and the Idol tour!--about a year ago? Imagine how good it'll feel to hear Kix Brooks announcing Bucky's first spin on American Country Countdown soon...)

As a matter of fact, now's probably a good time to check out those syndicated Top 40 radio show sites again; American Country Countdown with Kix Brooks and CMT's Country Countdown USA are chart and airplay based (so no requests, except for oldies dedications), and "A Different World" will be part of both broadcasts with our help. There's a longer post about country radio's big Top 40 countdowns here.

Kathy at Team Covington has a very timely countdown-related post this morning--it's a look at how both the CMT and the GAC Top Twenty shows work, and it's a must-read as Bucky's music video is about to make its debut in a couple of weeks or so. Thanks, Kathy!

Speaking of Bucky's much-anticipated music video--we've got our fingers crossed that some new "preview" still photos or info might pop up online this week. Stay tuned and keep your fingers crossed, too...

Bucky's promo tour for "A Different World" resumes tomorrow; he'll be heard on the Young and Elder show on Kix106 in Memphis bright and early Tuesday morning, and that afternoon, he'll be on the air at KSSN 96 in Little Rock, according to his official website. (We don't have exact times for the interviews, but we'll keep an ear out for more details as the day goes on.)

And to wrap things up for now, a brief and beautifully positive print-only (for now) review from the Dallas Morning News was shared by a gracious Taylor Hicks fan at the Fox boards; here's what their music critic had to say:

"At last, a worthy country song from an American Idol finalist. Bucky Covington's first single, 'A Different World,' is an old-school charmer about simpler times. His relaxed nasal twang floats over the cut's organic production by Sawyer Brown's Mark Miller. Mr. Covington's debut arrives April 17."

Big thanks to the kind poster who shared the great news! And if you'd like to hear that old-school charmer on WKML's "Top 5 at 6", be sure to zap them an email at country@wkml.com and request Bucky today.

(Edited to add a link to Ken Barnes' review of Bucky's single in this morning's Idol Chatter blog at USA Today.com . And yes, that's me speaking my somewhat over-caffeinated mind in the comments section--I couldn't resist. More soon!)

Glad to see a positive review from Dallas Morning News! Ken Barnes over at the USA Today Idol Chatter Blog reviewed the song and described it as "phony nostalgia" because of Bucky's age. I disagree because I am about the same age as Bucky and can relate to lots of things in the song.

  2. You and I and the Dallas Morning News are on the same wavelength, I think--most people over 25 or so can relate to something (if not everything) in those lyrics.

(Besides, since when is 100% singer/lyrics interlocking-fit a must have in country music? I can't imagine any lady with the beauty and personality who could "take her man" away from a young Dolly Parton, but "Jolene" still remains one of my favorite songs ever. (And did Johnny Cash really shoot a man in Reno just to watch him die? Honestly...)

Okay, I might have to pop over to Idol Chatter and politely give Mr. Barnes a piece of my scattered mind, but really--Ken Barnes has had a fun love/hate relationship with Bucky since season five beagn. I bet he ends up loving the album. :)

Well I love when people say they are going to give someone a piece of their mind...I always think...do they really have enough mind to spare that they are giving it away so freely? ;) lol lol

Hey old snarky Ken said Bucky's single was "sung well"...that is the only part I am going to focus on at this time. :D

  4. Hey, some say I lost most of my mind ages ago! So my giving away a remnant here and there is relatively meaningless, trust me. The damage has been done. :D

Confession: I really enjoy reading Ken Barnes' blog, even when I disagree with him; it's excellent to have a nationwide newspaper covering the show and its alumni with depth rather than just dismissing Idol as pop-culture dreck. And while I don't think he'll ever be a wild-eyed fan of Bucky's, it's interesting to hear what he thinks...

I much prefer Ken Barnes over Craig Berman at MSNBC who is just useless. Basically all that Berman does is parrot the judges, but without a sense of humor whatsoever. I oftentimes disagree with Ken, but at least he seems to have a mind of his own.

  6. I agree! And Ken Barnes genuinely seems to enjoy writing about the show and the singers. Sometimes I get the feeling Mr. Berman would rather be writing about watching paint dry.

I know that paint drying probably has more "stage presence" and "likeability" than Craig Berman. *snerk*

    Hey Winnie,
Good points about 'Jolene' and Johnny Cash!
    Love it.
I am probably definitely older than some of Bucky's fans, and my favorite line of the song is
"No bottled water , we drank from the garden hose..."
I swear that was one of my favorite things about summer as a kid- no water was colder or tasted
better than from the hose! I guess people dont
do that any more! Of course we were rural, too,
although Northern (VT) . 3 tv channels,
no seatbelts, every thing thats in the song!
    take care!

  9. Hi, Chan--sorry I missed you last night! I am remembering those sunny outdoor summer days too--when you'd been running around with the other kids in the hot sun getting thirsty, that was the best water ever. :) Hard to forget!

Nostalgia can hit you whether you're 15, 35 or 75--I think the song speaks to most of us, in mood if not in every specific reference.
Hope you are enjoying some nice weather there--it's 5 degrees here, so daydreaming about summer feels especially nice!
