First look at Monday: "The Bucky Diaries" and more...

Bucky Covington in a screencap from his new music video, now available for online viewing at CMT.com and Yahoo Music. You can pre-order Bucky's debut CD at Amazon, Best Buy and Target, hear the full version of his single "A Different World" at CMT, or enjoy samples of four songs from the CD at Bucky's official MySpace.

9:00 ET: The new installment of "The Bucky Diaries" is up at USA Today! Read Bucky's take on the niceness of his fans (awww), his experiences with his Lyric Street labelmates, and a very surprising meeting with the country star who almost recorded "A Different World". Be sure to leave a comment for Bucky and let him know you're enjoying the diaries--see you there!

Updated to add a quick link to Hazel Smith's new Hot Dish column at CMT.com, where Bucky got a quick but flattering mention this morning.:

I will be surprised -- no, shocked is a better word -- if the 2007 crop of American Idol hopefuls get any farther than the competition. There's not a country act in the bunch. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the success of past contestants who sang country music. Carrie Underwood has sold 5 million copies of her first CD, Kellie Pickler's debut album is gold and Bucky Covington is already stirring up a lot of attention with his upcoming Lyric Street CD.

("A lot of attention" sounds pretty good to us, too. Mrs. Smith's the most prominent writer to point out the country drought on this season's Idol, but she's not the only one; here's another Idol blogger/country music fan who sings the same lament...)

Otherwise , it was a fairly quiet weekend, to say the least. (Perhaps everyone's getting ready for Bucky's Grand Ole Opry debut on March 9th?) Here are a few bits and bobs to hold us until Bucky's promo tour starts up again on 3/8:

As of the Sunday evening rankings (and the Monday a.m. updates), Bucky's "A Different World" is sitting pretty at #33 with a bullet on the Mediabase Top 500 chart, and it's moved up a notch on the weighted chart to land at #33 there, as well. Could it reach Top 30 status before Opry night? It's possible--so keep requesting at your local station! And why not send a quick WKML "Top 5 at 6" request for "A Different World" to country@wkml.com while you're here...

Meanwhile, the voting continues. GAC's Top 20 Country Countdown and CMT's Pure Country 12-Pack await your say, and a thumbs-up at Yes.com is a fun way to let your local station know you're enjoying Bucky on the airwaves. Pick or Flick polling is completed; tune into CMT's Top 20 Countdown on Thursday to see whether Bucky's video was a Pick this week. (We hope so--fingers crossed!)

See you in a few hours--have a great Monday morning...

I really hope he statrs picking up new spins or stations. He is gonna loose his bullett soon. Bucky is down to a +80ish spins for the week. Where yesterday he had +180spins for the week. Thats a big drop. The fans ARE doing their job. Its the radio stations not doing theirs. It would crush me to see Bucky drop in the mediabase rank and loose his bullett.

I think the reason Bucky's bullet was so high last week is that he had all those new countdown spins. The countdown shows play his song the same number of times each week, so his bullet should be getting back to a more "normal" range now.

  4. Hello, Anons and Kathy! Kathy, I think the last time I looked, Bucky was ahead with about 60% of the vote. (That was around 1 a.m. last night.) Here's hoping that held when the picking ended. :)

The kind anon above me covered the effects of countdown spins (and that'll be even more pronounced once he hits Top 30--thanks, Anon 7:44!) so what follows is just general musing...

I'm no chart expert (at all!), but the charts have been volatile this week and will be for a little while, in part due to established hitmakers Toby Keith and Big & Rich both releasing singles just now. Those two have pole vaulted over everything in the Top 35 or so, including "A Different World." And three of the Top 10 are mature hits making their way back down the charts, so things might look wildly different this time next week. With any luck, Bucky will benefit from that extra room at the top.

Radio and Records/BDS is calling the single a "Breaker", and so far, it's had that nice bullet all the time it's been on the charts. I think it's going to keep that bullet--but even in the off chance it lost it for a chart or two, that is not a sign of disaster. Several of the songs ahead of Bucky right now lost their bullets once or twice on their way up!

At the risk of sounding like a huge...well, Pollyanna...Bucky is doing fine overall. For a new artist, a slow steady rise up the charts with a few temporary stalls seems to be about par for the course on the country charts these days. We'll keep doing what we can, of course--requesting the song, voting for Bucky on countdowns, etc. Keep the faith--it's a good performance of a good song by a good guy. :) The single's doing well, the album is going to do fantastically well.

And remember to have fun with all this--Bucky sure is! :)

  5. I am not chart savvy...y'all almost gave me a heart attack! Winnie it is always something.... Ira came home last night with his new schedule last night and they scheduled him next weekend! After he requested it off! I swear! I suppose worse comes to worse I will just take a bus myself and take a taxi or shuttle everywhere lol

I was looking at R&R yesterday and I had the same thought as you, Winnie. Right now, Bucky is up against some super stiff competition in the form of some of country's mega-stars. If I remember correctly, there were no more than 2 new artists in the top 10 on the country charts. Bucky is doing incredible well for a new artist with no CD released.

Kathy, I think Deb told me last night that Bucky was leading on the Pick or Flick when she went to bed.

  7. Cool Honey! Thanks! That would be such a big deal if he was the first to beat her. That should make CMT stand up and take notice.

We're working on the Nashville thing Winnie. He has 1 guy to call here in a it who he thinks will work Saturday for him. Hope so!!!

Bucky landed at #4 in today's Top 5 at 6

Larry talked about his video being #1 "on CMT"....meaning of course the CMT PC 12 Pack. :)

  9. I am so hoping that guy will save the day for you and Ira! :)

The suspense about Pick or Flick is immense--the people at CMT must know we'll all be tuned in for this one! I agree...a strong showing for Bucky would be a beautiful thing.

(It's still a big kick when Bucky's video comes up during CMT's regular programming; it'd be even more fun to see it more often...)

  10. LOL! Thanks, Anon--I must be losing my mind today. (I know...what mind?) I thought your post disappeared, but there it is. We appreciate the WKML update! Nice to see Bucky on the countdown again tonight.

I was a little worried about the bullet (it's down a little more this morning too) but I saw the same thing happen with Josh Gracin and a couple of others when they hovered around the high 30's. Gracin's got all the way down to a +6 (a few other songs even lost spins) but now it's back up in the triple digits.

I think that perhaps we'll see an improvement now that he's back out doing promo. I also think it's a very real possibility that Kellie will surpass him for the time being but I hope people don't freak about that too much. You can't beat the promo that Idol brings and her song and subject matter are very personal to her (as well as well-publicized).

  12. Thanks, Anon--well said. I think you're very right about the bullet fluctuations and about Kellie's momentum.

(What's funny is that I think the press is more likely to compare Bucky and Kellie than the audiences are! They have so many mutual fans that any freak out will probably be minor.)

And yep, Bucky's about to resume that promo tour, and that is always a huge help.
