Quick update, 1/5: "Different World" radio news

(Just a quick reminder--if you'd like to hear a clean 1:00 sample of Bucky Covington's new single, "Different World", head to WKRN-TV's Bradon2.com blog, where entertainment reporter Brad Schmitt has very kindly posted a sound clip. Enjoy!)

(Updated 6:37 p.m.--W)

There will be an all-new radio sidebar section coming late tonight, but for right now I wanted to share the good news from the previous comment section--Bucky's new single is moving up on the Mediabase airplay charts, from 123 yesterday to 89 early this morning. "Different World" is now heard on seven of the stations Mediabase tracks, including Fresno and Riverside CA, as well as Charlotte, Augusta, Burlington, Columbia SC, and Fayetteville. (Add Sirius and XM to the list, and you've got a lot of ears!) Many thanks to the gracious lady who started the Mediabase thread at Fox for sharing the info.

And be sure to request Bucky for tonight's WKML 97.5 "Top 5 at 6" countdown--this station streams online, so requests from all over are welcome. The very kind vgill shared a new email address yesterday; you can write to the station at country@wkml.com to ask for "Different World", too. She also mentioned that there's a lunchtime request hour from 12 to 1 p.m. Eastern--request shows are a great time to ask for a brand new song. If you live in the Fayetteville area and would like to call in, the listener phone line is 910 323 9570. Write or call, then tune in tonight at 6 p.m. EST to see where Bucky lands on the countdown!

It hardly seems possible, but it was nearly a week ago that we were all listening in to hear "Different World" on Sirius New Country's "Beyond the Buzz". Tomorrow's Saturday night--will Bucky's buzz grow beyond the new-music show and get him a coveted "Buzz Cut" spot? You can help make sure it happens by emailing the channel from the link at the top left of the station's home page and letting them know you'd like to hear Bucky Covington's single again. Or better yet, listen in tomorrow night between 9 and 11 p.m. EST and call in when you hear the song. (It'd be fun to hear an on-air rave for "Different World" this week--maybe you'll be the one to put in a good word for Bucky via satellite!)

Edited to add: Yep, Bucky is Number One on the WKML "Top 5 at 6" countdown tonight! There was a fun recorded phone interview from Bucky before the song was played; he thanked the station for all their help, thanked the fans for their kind birthday wishes for Mrs. Covington (and expressed sympathy for all the early-January birthday babies out there--"it all kinda gets blended in with the holidays") and shared an interesting word of advice from his producer/mentor Mark Miller. Mr. Miller advised him to make sure that everyone who was working with him was excited to be there. Bucky then thanked his label, Lyric Street Records, for going above and beyond the call of duty on all fronts. (Sounds very encouraging!)

He also spoke of how he came to choose "Different World" as his debut single, saying that he looked for some important points--"Could people relate to it? Does it make you think? Does it have a good beat?" He went on to say that the song definitely hit all the points on the checklist.
(We'll enjoy watching as it hits the high points on the charts as the weeks go by...)

Back tonight with more--stay tuned!

  1. Excellent! I did not realize it was getting airplay yet outside the Carolina's area except on Satellite radio! This is fantastic!

  3. At the rate things are going, the song will be on FM radio coast to coast before long! :)

Thanks, Anon, for letting us know you heard Bucky!

How do you people like this song? It's just down right terrible.

  5. Thanks for giving it a listen, anyway! (Hey, no artist can please them all... :)

I mean the message of the song is lame as could be. "Oh we used to drive around with no seatbelts." What kind of message is that. He's a nice guy, but this straight crap.

I believe it's called "nostalgia." Something country music lovers can relate to. Personally, the lyrics make the song even more fun for me, I can relate to everything he sings about in this one.

Gee, I don't know why people here might like it. Maybe because it's a Bucky fan blog?

But I can see your point. You should really depend on celebrities and/or musicians for all of your valuable safety tips and advice. Pshaw about using your own brand of common sense and all . . .

  9. I like it a lot, but really, there's never been a song written yet that will please everybody. If you dislike the song but think he's a nice guy, maybe you'll enjoy something else on the CD--at least you were willing to come check the single out, and that's cool.

Hope there's something (or many somethings) on the full CD that you'll enjoy more! Thanks for stopping in and giving it a whirl...

  10. Yes it is talking about the irony that with all the things now it is amazing we all survived childhood. I do recall the no seat belts. He is not suggesting we go back to those things. But hey at least he's being heard...no one can please all the people all the time.

Really gave it a shot and hoped to like it, but it's weak. The lyrical themes have been used a million times and the chorus is a rip off of a hundred thousand country songs. Guess I was expecting more.

  12. Thanks again for your input! Guess we'll agree to disagree, but I appreciate your honest opinion. I hope you'll pop in again when the full album is out and let us know what you think.

Indeed, I'll check back come album time. Didn't mean to offend anyone, just playing the devil's advocate on the song. I hope it works out for him as he is incredibly down to earth and kind. Just hope the album is more inspired and not as "rushed."

You didn't offend - I'm more than up for critique myself. I was just a little taken aback at someone asking why people here of all places would like it. I thought the answer would be obvious, therefore I incorrectly assumed you were just a troll. I apologize for being uber-sarcastic.

I like the song but I admittedly like the voice more than the song itself. I just really dig Bucky's voice, especially when it's paired with the right song.

It's entirely possible that the album itself will be a whole different ball game. We're talking about a radio friendly debut single, which would naturally be more the type of song not to make too many waves. He's a new artist, which is a relative unknown, plus he also has the Idol stigma to overcome. Have to get him on the air first and then perhaps riskier choices will come on down the line. I like Bucky doing stuff in the rockier vein, so I'm hoping to hear more of that from him in the future myself.

  15. GES, you and me both--I am very interested in hearing the whole album as well. Bucky has an intriguing set of musical influences, and this particular catchy, nostalgic single is the radio-friendly tip of what will no doubt be an impressive iceberg.

Anon, no offense taken--and again, thanks for giving it a listen.

DJ just said that Bucky will be in the top 5 at 6 for sure but added that very few artists are able to go beyond 3 days in a row at #1. Will Bucky make it 4 days in a row at #1? :)

  17. Hope so! That would be a perfect finish to an exciting week.

(May I ask a favor? I can't hear the stream--could you please come back and post the results?)

Come back? Am I leaving? ;) Nope! DJ just said he had "chills" (and made a burr sound effect) wondering if Bucky could hold on for 4th day in a row. haha

  34. This is all getting better! And I for one anon appreciate your good hopes for Bucky! You surely have not offended me. I do like the song..I think I love the line all we had were friends and they were outside... we played outside. Think that was what made me love the song. I personally thought the label might go with a more up tempo attention grabber right out of the gate, but they don't seem to ask my thoughts lol I am very anxious to hear the whole album as well.

    Plattenvertrag für Bucky Covington
    Geschrieben von CMN Hamburg
    Donnerstag, 4. Januar 2007

The Doug Howard that Bucky mentions in the AI homepage interview as the one who brought him "Different World" is the head of A&R at Lyric Street. Here is what Hazel Smith had to say about him in her column from 2005:

Doug Howard, Lyric Street Records' senior vice president of A&R, is one of Music Row's good guys with a set of "ears" to die for. He birddogs songs like it's going out of style, and it's paid off big time. These days, Doug has earned a mile-wide smile across his face that will not leave.

Why? For six weeks, Lyric Street's Rascal Flatts reigned at No. 1 with "Bless This Broken Road." Immediately after that, former Marine and American Idol contestant Josh Gracin ascended to the top of the charts with another Lyric Street single, "Nothin' to Lose." Even American Idol judge Simon Cowell -- with arrogance out the yin yang -- suggested Gracin would make it country. Making it he is. Word I get is Gracin's self-titled CD is 100,000 units shy of going gold.

Friends, the boutique label known as Lyric Street has quietly hit the big time. Watch their smoke.

I think we can all agree that his instincts for Bucky's first single were dead on.

  40. Very interesting find--thanks, Carol! "A set of ears to die for?" "Birddogs songs like it's going out of style?"

Oh, yes--it sounds like Mr. Howard's instincts about this one are right on the money... :)
