4/12 Results: "Stickin' by our Real Good Man"

By now, you've already heard the news. I'll spare you the usual recap--it was a long and drawn out one-hour show, with a few bright spots and a lot of filler, nonsense and general weirdness--and get right down to the heart of the matter, which is Bucky Covington, and us, and where we all go from here.

Perhaps the most achingly bittersweet part of tonight's events was the way Bucky took it in stride. It only underscored what we--and the show--would be missing when he faced the situation with a shrug and a smile and a soft "Well, somebody had to go." Bucky gave this thing his all, and he gave it his all his way, resulting in some of the most memorable performances in Idol history. If there was ever any doubt that Bucky Covington is exactly who he seems to be, that doubt is long gone now.

But is Bucky long gone? Not a chance, y'all. Not a chance.

Yes, I know. Many of us here are Idol veterans, and we've seen it happen before--some lovely, charming performer finishes eighth, or seventh, or tenth, and stands next to Ryan, shouting "you haven't seen the last of me, America!", then promptly disappears for good. But Bucky Covington is something entirely different, I think. Bucky was and is something too discernably real for Idol--a true, organically-grown singer/songwriter with a raspy, rootsy voice and a beautifully-honed Southern rock sensibility. Never in a million years would most of us have thought that someone so utterly genuine would get so far on this season of Idol, where--to be frank--being genuine seems to be virtually a liability.

Yet, there he was, and there we were, and some of us who wouldn't ordinarily touch American Idol with a ten-foot pole were dialing our fingers off every Tuesday night, and crossing those raw fingers every Wednesday. In a strange way, we have Idol to thank for bringing us someone who wasn't quite the perfect fit for the show--but who was decidedly a perfect fit for us, his new and loyal fans.

So where's Bucky going, and where are we going with him?

It's true that we won't have our Tuesday and Wednesday night dates with Bucky, and we'll miss that terribly. Let's face it, he was an absolute joy to have on our TV sets twice a week. But there's no doubt in my mind that there's some heavy rotation on CMT and/or MTV in Bucky's future, and there's the summer tour to look forward to. (Something tells me Bucky's going to absolutely run away with the live Idols show this year. Just a hunch.)

We're going to be here for him, plain and simple. He's got the voice, the talent and the charm--and now he's got the audience, too-- a nationwide audience united in our desire for his first CD. We can't vote for him with our phones any more, but we can sure vote with our feet and our wallets. Yep, this is the one time when a departing Idol didn't even have to say it--but I will. You haven't seen the last of Bucky, America.

This blog is still open for business. More news as it happens...

(If you'd like to send Bucky some love, you can leave a message on the fan blog at Bucky Covington Online--the site is sponsored by his family and friends.)

Y'all, Bucky's bad day was today.

I still can't believe it. I'm shaking as I type this.

We haven't heard the end of him by a longshot, and I'll still be here as long as there's news.

    Please leave a comment--thnaks.

  2. Ooook, I fail to, completely FAIL to see how on earth he got the lowest votes....But you are right, we have NOT heard the last of him, I will be waiting in line until his first album comes out, and wish both him and all of his fans a very loooooooong relationship....I voted for 2 hours straight every week...sigh....

  3. You two are sweet--and you're both right. I couldn't be more proud of our Bucky. There will be CDs, and concerts, and his whole career to look forward to, and while this really hurts right now, it's--cliched as it sounds--only the beginning.

It's been a pleasure talking with you all, and I hope you'll stick around! Bucky's Idol journey may be done, but his fan base is in it for the long run, so...this blog will go on.

God bless! And if you're lurking--and so many people are tonight--say hi and let us know who you are! And let's give Bucky a standing ovation...he deserves it.

I really can't believe this. How is it possible?
It honestly makes me suspicious of the
voting process. I knew Bucky wasnt likely to win, but something just doesnt feel right
about this to me - in my gut - something
feels not on the up and up.
    Maybe I'm wrong, but still.........

I wonder, are we sure that the voting totals
    really reflect the public?
I'm very sad to see Bucky go. I know I voted
all 2 hours every week, and that most like ly
much of his GROWING fan base did, too,
    so.....?
Thanks Buckymania for such a great blog!

  6. Thank you for the kind words! And yes, I hate that about Idol...there's always a nagging doubt about the vote totals. I wish they released verified totals to the public--but that'll never happen. (Notice that the show didn't even give out this week's general votes cast, as far as I can recall...)

Guess at this point I'll try to look toward the future--with any luck, the Rascal Flatts/Travis Tritt/Carrie Underwood props will blossom into a real industry interest in Bucky, and a good solid record contract. (Not sure how the CD delay thing works for 8th place finishers, but I'd like to find out. It'll be worth the wait.)

    Sorry, I'm rambling--guess I'm still a little upset. =)

I am still in tears. But it is not the end. We will not let it be! Demand for his cd will mean a lot! We love Bucky and will follow wherever he wants to go! Kathy G (kathyg85 on my fotki and kathyg722 on AI boards)

  8. Mine too. =(

He's going to have such a career ahead of him--with all this love and support surrounding him, there's no way he can miss.

    But it hurts today...

Guess I'll be the lucky thirteenth.

Winnie, my neighbor and friend, thanks for introducing me to your favorite new Idol, who is now *my* favorite new country-rock singer. He is a real class act, and I can't wait to get my hands on hisCD whenever it comes out. It'll be like stereo, since I'll be hearing it right down the hall. :)

Thanks for letting me use your "computah!" and for lettingme share in the fun. You need a ride to any Bucky show, you let me know girl.

Hugs to you and to the Bucky maniacs out there, y'all rule. Dina

  10. Awwwww...thanks, Dina!

I've been reading about Josh Gracin, and trying to stay positive. Bucky's going to make it--I can feel it in my bones.

Kathy, I'm so with you--the demand for his debut CD is super-high, and getting higher. (One thing the music biz does understand is money--and Bucky's fan base is incredibly passionate. I'm hoping that some high-powered visionary record company exec will find a way to get Bucky out of that Idol restriction, and into the studio with some excellent producer who can see what he's all about.)

Sigh. Counting down the days until the tour now.
