Coffee break news: a new review, and a backstage hello at the Wildhorse...

Our friends at Country Stars Online have just posted a long and enjoyable review of Bucky Covington's debut CD (listen to it online at Clear Channel Music) , which includes this fun "Starbucky" anecdote:

I think my favorite track on Covington's album is "I'm Good". This one has almost a Clay Walker feel to it, I love it! The beginning of the song Covington sings; "I got my eye on the deacon's daughter/ I'm diesel fuel and she's holy water", just goes to show you that it's fun, it's crazy, this is what it's all about! A great beat, great lyrics, great harmony and a great band. I'm looking forward to turning this one up when it reaches the top 10. I was sitting at Starbucks while finishing the review on this fantastic album and I even had people asking "thats a great song, who is it?" When I told them it was the new Covington album. I had a small gathering and a barrage of questions.

Can't help but love that "when it reaches the Top 10" line! You can read Amy Ross' entire review here; Country Stars Online also offers you the chance to submit a review through their "Real People Review" section.

Bucky took some time to congratulate fellow Nashville newcomers Lantana on their concert debut at the Wildhorse Saloon; That's Country has the story and a great photo, too. (Bucky and Lantana shared the stage with other emerging stars at the "Live from CRS-38" showcase at the Wildhorse back in March--it's good to see so much talent blossoming in Music City this spring!)

More later today--c'mon back...

Ken Barnes is up to his old tricks again on the USA Today blog. This is what he said about Bucky:

24-4 Bucky (23,000; 84,000 total): Big drop of 62%, especially compared with the country album that entered the chart last week just behind Bucky, by Martina McBride -- it dropped just 33% in its second week and stayed in the top 10. That indicates Bucky's fan base went out and bought the album as soon as possible; further sales are likely to come in much smaller weekly increments.

For starters, Martina has been on the charts a full month - she didn't debut last week. Not to mention, she's a superstar - he should be comparing Bucky's drop with Clay Walker's, who is a country artist who debuted the same week and who had EXACTLY THE SAME PERCENTAGE DROP in sales.

I replied over there so hopefully he'll update his info a little. He seems like a decent guy but it just bugs me that he seems to base his posts on bias rather than fact. He's making it sound like Bucky is a flop and that's not accurate whatsoever.

Ken is not worth worrying about....he did not say anything that was not true....hum...it is true that "further sales are likely to come in much smaller weekly increments" unless Lryic has some wild national promotion plan which is not seeming likely.

Stating that Martina debuted last week and only experienced a 33% drop in her second week was completely untrue. It paints a much worse picture than the reality of the situation. He does that quite a bit, unless it's one of his pets. And a lot of people read that blog.

ITA though - I would like to see Lyric beef up the promo.

Okay meant he did not say anything that "was not true about Bucky."

Martina benefited from her AI appearance. So it looks like only Carrie and Kellie are going to be the past finalists put on the regular shows this year.

I would have thought they would put Katharine too....but must have given up on her already.

Would be lovely if Bucky got the benefit of a 30 million audience appearance. But guess below is not about to freeze over. LOL

Oh well...moving on to plan B...a slow build (as Ken implied) to gold. :D

I just ignore Ken. He has always disliked Bucky.

So far Bucky's sales have been slightly higher than Josh Gracin's:

    Bucky first week: 61,000
    Bucky second week: 23,000

    Josh first week: 57,000
    Josh second week: 21,000

Josh went gold after a year, so if their sales stay similar, I think Bucky will reach gold in a year too (hopefully!)

I wish the reporters and reviewers would look at the positive. Bucky has done what no other 8th place finisher has done. Put out the BEST reviewed country album, Topped the country chart, has a single on the radio in the top 20. Bucky has still sold 84k. That is actually better than I thought he would do. Slow and steady wins the race!

  7. Hi, Anons and Marzy!

I honestly think slow and steady is going to win the race, too.

Every fan group goes out and buys their favorite artist's album as soon as possible, so with all due respect, Mr. Barnes is kinda boldly stating the sky is blue, there! And further sales do come in smaller increments for a while as word of mouth spreads--especially for a brand new artist with no track record yet. After that, second and third and fourth hit singles cause surges in sales. Not terribly surprising or unusual in the life of any album, including Bucky's.

The big difference is that Bucky's album is stocked with a lot of possible singles--so a lot of surges are possible too. I think it will indeed be one of those albums that sells well for a long time. Mr. Barnes disagrees with us on the number of potential singles, so he'd probably not factor that into his predictions. Again, no surprise.

It's way, way too soon for him--or us!--to go into anything remotely like worry mode, and frankly, I don't think worrying will ever be necessary. "Flop" and "#1 debut/highest selling male country debut since Billy Ray" don't even go into the same sentence, so no worries there--I don't think any reasonable person sees it as a flop, and the unreasonable people aren't worth worrying about. :)

Bucky's working incredibly hard on the road all spring and summer long promoting this CD--I'm wishing with everyone else that he could get some vocal rest, but even so, he's his own best salesman live.

Soooooooo...my usual attitude stands. Keep the faith (he's doin' great--honestly--and he'll be doing great six months and a year from now), don't let the naysayers steal the fun, and let Bucky's "20th Question Philosophy" be a guide:

    20. Does it get overwhelming worrying about the opinion of others?

Not so much now. When I first started Idol, I came in with the attitude of, "I'm going to make everybody love me." And then I got on the Internet and started seeing just how wrong I was. (laughs) So now the only thing I can do is do what I do. Be who I am. And hopefully they like it, and hopefully that's what they want. If that's not the case, what can you do? I'm not a big worrier. I don't worry about things because I found a long time ago that it doesn't fix anything. It doesn't solve it. Either fix it or move on because worrying doesn't fix anything.

ITA Winnie. Doing what Bucky has done and coming from where he has can hardly be seen as anything but a success.

It doesn't bother me that Ken doesn't like Bucky because everyone has a right to their opinion. What bothers me is that he makes a post about chart stats, which should always be based on fact, and states something entirely untrue as fact, seemingly to put things in a bad light. Besides the fact that it's sloppy journalism, I totally don't get the mindset.

He still hasn't corrected it but I'm not holding my breath, lol.

  9. Thanks, Anon--we must be thinking alike. I actually just made a huge long post out front about it this morning, since so many messages came about the Idol Chatter line--but you said it much better, in a lot less space!

The numbers are what they are--the interpretation he added struck me as a wild leap and the Martina Mc Bride comparison left me scratching my head. (Admittedly, it's not hard to puzzle me these days, but still... :)

Thanks! I am definitely open to corrections, suggestions and differing opinions...but I just think he was off base this particular time.
