Grand Ole Opry, 3/9: Top 30 and fabulous...

Hey, it's a fuzzy photo by me! Bucky Covington ant the Grand Ole Opry, 3/9/07Before we start the concert recap, a pause for some big news: Bucky's single "A Different World" has officially hit Top 30 status on both the Top 500 and the weighted Mediabase charts! Keep requesting at your local country stations, y'all! It makes a huge difference--especially now that the song is being heard for the very first time on so many new playlists. The new cities need to know we love listening to Bucky on the radio--so if you're finally hearing "A Different World" in your town, call or e-quest and make sure you'll have that pleasure again and again...

There is something truly magical about the Grand Ole Opry. It's true that the Opry's undergone a few changes over the years--some popular, others less so. But at the heart of it all, there's a sweetness borne of tradition, respect and the celebration of a quintessentially American form of music that is ever evolving. Yet with each new twist and turn the genre takes, the Opry has a way of reminding us all that country music is bound by something that words and categories and definitions just can't cover. It's a nameless thread that runs through the music itself.

Friday night, Bucky Covington became a link in that timeless chain.

(Kathy covered the pre-show gatherings so beautifully at Team Covington that I'll bow to genius and skip ahead to the show itself...)

Grand Ole Opry program for March 9th; click for larger sizeThe Opry House is the newer, more modern home of the Grand Ole Opry, but it's surprisingly cozy inside; there's no such thing as a "bad seat" there, really, and as we slipped into our church-style pews and got situated, we were treated to a short film on the history of the Opry, before the great Porter Wagoner took the stage. (Mr. Wagoner was just as dazzling as he's always been in a bright blue rhinestone-bedecked suit.) Connie Smith's lovely voice serenaded us next, followed by a truly funny version of the classic "Cool Water" by Riders in the Sky. (I wish I'd gotten a photo of their incredible stage gear!) Ralph Stanley and his band closed the first half hour in breathtaking fashion. (It's impossible to describe, but it was brilliant--make a point of seeing him if you can.)

A break and a live commercial came and went (it was fun to see the announcers at the microphones, doing their bit for Martha White flour), and then the irrepressible Little Jimmy Dickens took over. It's amazing to think he's been entertaining folks since the 1930's or so! Not only that, he's as warm as ever--it looks like he's still having fun up there, and I can speak for the audience and say we had fun out here, too. (Bucky also had fun--we could see him in the wings, cracking up at Mr. Dickens' corny but oh-so-cute jokes.) He introduced Bucky with sweetness, mentioning that there was a young man next who was a newcomer to the Opry stage: "he's all shook up and nervous..." Mr. Dickens said with a smile, "but you can take all that away with your applause for my friend...Bucky Covington."

Bucky strolled onstage sans guitar, wearing jeans, his black leather jacket, a dark t-shirt and a huge grin, and stood on the famed circle as he began a brief introduction to "A Different World", accompanied by loud cheers. (Yes, I believe there were quite a few Bucky Covington fans in the Opry House...)

Was he a little nervous--or perhaps just overwhelmed--for his first song at the Grand Ole Opry? Maybe so, but it didn't affect his vocals at all--it was a lovely rendition of "A Different World," soulful and heartfelt, and the whole of the audience seemed to love it too. At the end of the tune, Bucky smiled and said that he'd be fine "as soon as he stopped shaking"--and did an endearing shake/dance that made the crowd giggle and clap. (And quite a few freshly-minted Bucky Covington fans were created right about then, no doubt--welcome, everyone!)

Bucky segued into "Hometown" with a kind shout out to Mark Miller and Sawyer Brown, and told a condensed version of the story about the two different "Hometown" songs that were under discussion for the album. It was my first time hearing the song live, and it was the perfect choice for Bucky's first night at the Opry--sweet and graceful and sentimental. By the end of the first verse, he strolled the stage like someone who'd been there many, many times before. "Hometown" was a crowd-pleaser, too, and all too soon the announcer was thanking Bucky as he left the stage with a wave and an appreciative nod. "Bucky Covington, ladies and gentlemen...I'm sure we'll be seeing him again at the Grand Ole Opry". (Actually, we'll be seeing him again at the Opry in no time at all--April 7th, to be exact.) Bucky stopped to greet Little Jimmy Dickens on his way offstage; the diminutive legend and the lanky newcomer shared a beautiful smile.

What's beautiful about the Opry is that you get a real sense of the family vibe that makes country music so much fun, even as so many different styles are represented on stage. We were treated to everything from bluegrass to Cajun to gospel to the classic Nashville sound to neo-Western, from artists as varied as Ricky Skaggs, Jack Greene, Bill Anderson (still the consummate charmer), the Whites, Michael Martin Murphey and Mike Snider (whose dance moves to the Vietti chili jingle really deserve a blog post of their own.) How did Bucky fit into the mix? Quite nicely, I thought, and I don't think I was alone. The very thing that struck so many of us from the start--that authentic, honest, exuberantly real flavor he brings to everything he sings--was in full bloom at the Grand Old Opry. It was an incredible honor to be there for Bucky's first appearance on country's greatest stage--and if you get the chance, be sure to see him there, too. You'll come away feeling like you've seen a bit of history in the making.

There are so many memories, photos, recaps and such coming in from Bucky's many fans who were there that it's hard to know where to begin--I'll post a link to the Fox board thread for now, but I'll be updating this post with photos, links and more as time allows. Be sure to reload for the latest.

I'll also be thanking y'all by email as the night rolls on, but I wanted to say how wonderful it was to meet so many of Bucky's great fans, family and friends at the Opry--what a classic night we shared. If you'd like to thank Hildi right now, there's a sweet thank-you thread in progress at the CMT boards! More soon...

  5. Aww, thanks! :)

I actually got four hours added to my return trip--got stranded due to oversold seats in beautiful Cincinnati...and then it took four more hours to get to the east from downtown! Never travel during early daylight savings Sunday in Cleveland. :)

(Totally worth it though--Bucky at the Opry, and top 30 to boot? Happy Sunday!)

wow, It sounds like you had to go through hell to get your little piece of Bucky Heaven. This morning I snuck out of the room while Honey and Peg were still sound asleep to get another Waffle House fix and was thinking that you would be home and resting by then. Wrong on both counts.

Beautiful recap. You really captured the Opry experience so well. I was so happy to share it with you and so many other wonderful people. Bucky has the best fans.

  8. Hi, Grace and Beesims! Beesims, thank you so much for everything--it was a true joy hangin' out with you and our buddies in Nashville!

Grace, hello there--I'm having my usual dire PC problems, so I can't say for sure...but I have a feeling that anything along those lines would turn up on the Fox board Opry thread tonight or tomorrow. Bet someone will be far more helpful here or there shortly! Here's the link:

Bucky is not gonna be in the Top 30 for long he took quite a drop in gains for the week. Down to the 50s. And under 1200 spins. How is that possible? With all of the extra plays on CMT & GAC countdowns. I am a little worried hes not going to go much higher. Josh Gracin is now in the - in gains and only just made it to 25 yesterday. I hope hes not at a stall now. Brad Paisley with pass him tomorrow and knock him back.

Thanks for the wonderful Opry recap! I enjoyed reading the recap over at Team Covington also. I'm sorry I missed seeing Bucky at the Opry. What a wonderful and amazing moment that must have been for him to sing on that stage for the very first time.

If anyone wants to see what Bucky was doing on the day AFTER the Opry, here are some pics from the Southern Women's Show in Memphis. Bucky answered questions and signed autographs -- no singing though, unfortunately (except for a couple of lines from an Elvis song). Dr. Will from Big Brother was there too, if anyone watches that show.

He's still got a positive bullet, even if it is smaller than before. He's been fluctuating - in the 80's yesterday, in the 100's the day before. Gracin actually lost spins for a while when he was at Bucky's point on the charts but he did rebound. I think it's a given that Brad's single will skyrocket past him and many others - it has to be expected; he's a superstar whereas Bucky is just starting out.

I'm just glad he's got a single on the charts and we get an album. Last year when he got eliminated, I never though I'd get that much. I totally understand the concern, but I guess my advice would be to enjoy the ride. It's not worth getting worked up about - that's Lyric Street's job.

Personally, my very highest expectation for his first single was top 20. If he gets there fine, if he doesn't, I think there are better singles in the wings.

Great recap Winnie! Glad that you made it home safely even with the extended roadtrip.

  17. Good morning all, and thanks! (Yes, I know it's almost afternoon--that unexpectedly long roadtrip finally caught up with me last night. Sleeping like a log is an understatement... :)

Buckyflowers, it was an such a joy to get a chance to meet you too, and you're right--all of us have gotten to "know" each other for so long that it felt more like a bunch of old friends having a get together before a show. You are very kind, and it was wonderful to finally get to shake your hand and say hi face to face!

Pizzi, you are just going to have to come along for one of these shows! Are any of his new dates close to you? I sure hope so--it's about time you heard Bucky sing live again. :) We wish you were there, too!

Anon 7:37, thanks a million for the Photobucket link to the conference shots. (Hope you can get to Bucky's April 7th Opry show!) I am going to pop that link on the front page in the full Monday news post--thank you.

Bren, thanks and hi! I really am looking forward to meeting you and the lil' votin' machines at a show someday soon. :)

Anon 4:23, GES said it so beautifully that I am going to bow to brilliance. :). Bucky's chart fluctuations are really and truly about what you'd expect for a newcomer, especially one who is indeed competing with some major superstars. Think positive--he is moving up steadily and holding his own, and his CD isn't even out yet!

The main thing for us is to keep doing the things we do have some control over--request locally, on your favorite online stations and on the national syndicated shows, keep voting on the video countdowns and such (video plays count as spins) and just be as supportive of Bucky and of the single as we can.

And most of all have fun with this, and keep the faith. Charts fluctuate--it's the nature of the beast. Everyone (including Toby, Brad, Big & Rich and all the other megastars Bucky's sharing the charts with now) is a "new artist" once. The big question is, "does the new artist have the talent, charm, musical instincts, drive, flexibility, etc." to stick around for the long haul? We all know Bucky Covington does, absolutely.

Here's a positive aspect to think about--with a Top 30 spot comes new stations; and then we've got the upcoming media blitz in advance of the CD releases--lots of TV performances and appearances ahead. Bucky will be all over the place in the next few weeks and even the most casual fans will know he's got a single out now and an album coming very soon!

So...like GES says, enjoy the ride. Have fun with it all! We'll keep requesting "A Different World", supporting the song, encouraging the video plays and spreadin' the word. Bucky, his management and Lyric Street are on the ball, too. Bucky's got some amazing support all around, and he's in this for the long haul. So are we.

    We're good. :)

Buckyfaninmi, hello! I haven't heard anything yet as far as audio--if I do, I'll be sure to share the word. (It'll probably turn up in the Opry thread at the Fox boards fastest, though.)
