As you might have imagined, last night's WGHP story and Stewart Pittman's very positive post at Viewfinder Blues have inspired a lot of buzz among Bucky's fans. There's a discussion thread happening at the Fox boards, and another at MJ's Big Blog. (Scroll down to last night's Bucky Covington Sneak Peek post at MJ's, then hit the Comments link. Even those who aren't necessarily passionate Bucky fans were quite impressed with what they saw and heard of Bucky's new work...)
(Just as an aside...all those late Tuesday nights dialing during Bucky's run on Idol were so worth it, weren't they?)
What a wild and wonderful week for Covington fans! I'll have a full post here after I get my DSL connection fully fixed; in the meanwhile, I'd love to know what you're thinking about "Empty Handed", the upcoming CD, the terrific TV coverage Bucky's had this week, the CMAs, Bucky's haircut, the various official board kerfuffles, Rocky's photo contest, or anything at all! Hop into comments and let's talk...
News update next--see you in a bit!
Okay, since my old PC freezes when I try to post at the Fox boards, here's my take on the "granny factor"...
ReplyDeleteOf course, there will be fans of all ages for Bucky or for any Idol alum. American Idol is an all-ages show! I'd bet that almost every ex-Idol with some degree of popularity has fans ranging from kids to their grandparents. It's just the nature of things...
Having said that, though, I have to say this--when is anyone of any age supposed to stop having fun? My family is known for many things, but longevity is sadly not one of them. Both my grandmother and my beloved aunt (who would have loved Bucky) didn't make it to their 50th birthdays, and another precious young lady in my family passed away far too soon recently. Honestly, if I could have all of them with me now, I wouldn't care if their favorite singer was 18 or 81, just as long as they were happy, healthy and enjoying life.
I just don't get this idea that women over whatever age trolls consider "old" are supposed to just stop listening to music and having a good time. If I'm blessed enough to make it to 50, I am going to have an enormous party with two big "5" "0" candles on top of a huge chocolate cake, and a Bucky CD cranked up loud. (You're all invited. :)
Rant over--I couldn't say it there, but I wanted to say it here. The more Bucky fans, the better. And the day you stop having fun with music and with life--whether you're 16, 26, 36, 46 or 96--is the day you're growing "old". Until then? Party on...
(End of rant now, really.)
P.S.--I am liking "Empty Handed" more and more--it has the dark intense vibe I enjoyed so much in "Can't Be Wrong." And did Bucky say he'd be writing some of the songs on the album, too? Can't wait...
Who's complaing about grannies?? Send the troll over to me and I'll bop him with my cane. :-) Hows it going??
ReplyDeletePS: I reeeeeeeeeeally liked Emppty Handed. It does have that dark flavor . Wouldve been nice if Bucky could have shown that off on the show, but good that it'll be on the CD. Get this computer fixed!!!!
ReplyDeleteHey, Dina! Did I just miss you? When did you sneak in here? :)
ReplyDeleteYou'd probably be shocked (shocked, I say) to know that I really liked it, too--I love Bucky's voice anyway, but the moody, strong sound of that tune is so very Not Idol, if you know what I mean. And going by Stewart Pittman's take, it's safe to assume this is really going to be a Bucky CD, rather than a quickie cash-in Idol dreamboat thing.
And yeah, grabbing my cane, too! :) Hope you're having a great day, and I'll see you tonight.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteWell, I havent seen the granny-factor stuff,
but if people are saying that Bucky has an
older fan base, I dont think thats true - I do think that women who are older, whose kids are raised and out of the house have a lot more freedom to travel to see him play - that might be a factor.
I LOOVE this single ! I love his rocking out side!
Somone catch me before I faint!
But really, I love the intensity of it. And its not
easy to stay in tune when you're really
pushing a note like that with a yell-growl...I'm
even more impressed with him now.
The haircut...hm. At first I went Oh no, they did
a Keith Urban 'do on him! ( Nothing against Keith,
I just dont want them to fancy him up too much)
But then, as I watched, I realized, its not so bad,
and actually not that different from what
he had before.
Thats my 2cents......Thanks Winnie for keeping us all informed - This has been a great week!
Chan
Hi, Chan!
ReplyDeleteYou know, I saw the same big age range you did at the Idol concerts--everyone from kids to teens to mature people seemed to enjoy Bucky. And that's a good thing! The ladies who are able to travel and go out to the shows to support Bucky are blessed--and really appreciated, too. Guess it just bugged me that someone was trying to put any of Bucky's fans down, hence the rant...but the posters at the Fox boards have a great sense of humor and ended up having a good time with the whole topic.
And "intense" is a good way to describe "Empty Handed"! I hope that as the release date draws closer, we get a jukebox sampler like the one Sony did for Chris Daughtry. Chances are good that there will be a true range of moods on Bucky's CD--so looking forward to experiencing the whole thing.
Hope you're having a good night out there--we've been hearing about the wild weather out your way. Fingers crossed things are back to near normal now (or soon!)
Winnie
Empty Handed has an edgy country feel and it reminds me of Save A Horse Ride A Cowboy by Big and Rich. Same kind of vibe, is that what they'd call Outlaw Country?
ReplyDeleteA clarification...
ReplyDelete"Empty Handed" just happened to be the song they were working on during our shoot. Though it seems a natural for the album, no one said it would be the lead single. In fact, I believed they alluded to an even stronger track. Hmmmm...
After saying our goodbyes, I realized I left a battery charger in the studio and went back to get it. When I opened the door, Bucky was back in the booth, as Miller played back the swooping bridge of a full-blown ballad. You guys in the soft seats have nothing to worry about. Bucky's got your back.
More than anything, our boy's in good hands. Mark Miller runs a family joint and seems to have taken an interest in Bucky's overall well-being as well as his chart potential. Many, many folk contacted Bucky when Idol tossed him, most with Money on their minds. Mark Miller, it seems, called him up to talk about Music.
The rest is history...we hope.
Thanks for that clarification--and for your excellent piece this week. Musically, I'm sort of half in the "soft seats" and half on the dance floor, ready for a rowdy rockin' good time, and it sounds like Mark and Bucky have both bases--and a few more--nicely covered. (And now we're all madly curious about that "stronger track", you know...)
ReplyDeleteIt's great to know Bucky's in good hands--I've heard nothing but excellent things about Mark Miller, personally and professionally, and it really does sound like a producer/artist match made in heaven.
It's tough to be patient, but your story really gave us a preview we'll treasure during these long months of waiting for that CD. Here's hoping you'll be covering Bucky's 20th year in the business, too...
And hi, Honeygirl! You know, now that you mention it, I can hear sort of a Big and Rich vibe there. The Outlaw Country sound is something that will always have an audience...it's evolved in an interesting way, and it's going to be fun to hear Bucky's spin on it.
