So...Bucky's on vacation, the boards are quiet (although the various "songwriting" threads at the Fox boards are pretty lively), and we're all basically waiting for word from Hazel Smith, O-Seven, Mark Miller, Bucky himself...somebody. What to do?
If past history is any clue--and lately, when it comes to Idol, it isn't as clear a clue as it should be--this is a deceptively quiet time for the now ex-Idols. The new season hasn't yet begun, and tour memories are still fresh, so the faintly-ticking clock in the background might be easy to miss--but it's there. How do the "national men of mystery" (that would be the technically-unsigned-to-a-major-label-for-now Elliott, Ace and Bucky, of course) keep their fanbases engaged and informed during and beyond the dreaded Idol lull?
Idol itself is taking no chances--the powers that be launched American Idol Rewind, a look back at Season One, this weekend--a clever way to keep the brand name alive in the public mind between now and the start of Season Six. And the mighty publicity machines of RCA/BNA and 19 are eager to make sure you remember busy signees Kellie Pickler, Taylor Hicks, Chris Daughtry and Katharine Mc Phee. But Bucky, E and Ace are going to have to keep their own brand names in the public mind, for now...with a little help from their friends, of course.
Ace launched a splashy official site, AceMusic.com, and has a new catchy indie single, "Scattered", going for adds on radio this week. (He also is blessed with a very dedicated street team--red t-shirted Highrollers were out in force at the last show in Wilkes-Barre, handing out slick promo postcards and temporary "Scattered" tattoos to fans in line at the arena.) Will this eventually morph into a major label signing and a solid full debut CD? We're hoping for that. (We like us some Ace and E around here, too...)
Elliott Yamin may not have announced a major label contract yet--official word is that he's still weighing two attractive options--but his publicity team is certainly A-list. This week alone, he's been mentioned in the Washington Post's "Names and Faces" column (via MJ's, with many thanks), and at People.com, though the reasons for that last blurb are rather painful. (Get better soon, E!) His upcoming October 8th concert at the Virginia State Fair with LMBO--mentioned in both articles--should generate a nice amount of buzz, as well.
And Bucky? Our last major announcement from Bucky's team was the happy (and welcome) September 15th news confirming his upcoming debut CD, with the Mark Miller/O-Seven team in his corner. (Did I mention I can't wait to hit the road with Bucky's music blasting? All righty, then...) Unlike Ace and Elliott, there doesn't seem to be an official site or a high-powered publicity firm keeping Bucky in the news at the moment--but things of this nature have a tendency to change--and change fast. We could have a lot to talk about by this time next week--just sayin'. Ahem.
(As far as that new official site for Bucky goes--does O-Seven have something in the works? There's a space on Rocky's official site for a link to Bucky's, with a "coming soon" graphic attached. Hmmm...looks like there might be something to link to shortly...)
Meanwhile, we have a little street-teaming of our own to do. If you haven't signed up for Kathy's Team Covington mailing list, be sure to do so--it's a growing group of Bucky supporters, poised and ready to stand behind our favorite new singer when the official machine kicks into high gear. Buck Wild and Bucky Covington Fans R Us have some very stylish support graphics for your website, email, Live Journal, etc., as does the recently-revamped (and very fun--wish my PC didn't shut me out of this place!) Bucky Country. And if you'd like to post on the CMT thread for Bucky, and share your enthusiasm with the general public outside the Idol/Bucky fan corners of the web, it'd probably be a great time to do so...
A lull's a lull, y'all. There's no way of getting around the fact. But while we're shining up our boots for the label news happy dance, there are lots of little ways to let the world know that the growly/rootsy country-rocker with the beautiful smile and the distinctive sound is still very much supported, even now that Idol is solidly in the rear view mirror. Rock that BSTee and spread the news--and if you have any fresh street team ideas, feel free to share them here.
More later!
