Quick update, 8/2

A portrait of Bucky from the current American Idol tour book, scanned by Mike of IDF.(By popular demand! A reader mourned the fact that this photo had scrolled off the front page, so here it is again--Bucky's portrait from the current Idol tour program, scanned by Mike of IDF.)

Yep, another busy news day! A couple of reviews of the Charlotte concert start things off this morning; as you might have imagined, Bucky, Kellie and Chris were a big hit with the home-state crowd. From the Charlotte Observer:

McLeansville's Chris Daughtry was a crowd favorite. He kicked off the second half of the show with Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love." He absolutely owned the arena when the band dropped out during the song's bridge for a quick a cappella solo. He joined Elliott Yamin, Ace Young and Rockingham's Bucky Covington for Guns N' Roses' "Patience," which showcased their four-part harmonies and ended up one of Covington's strongest performances. An early countrified duet with Pickler of "You're the One That I Want" from "Grease" didn't work as well, although fans thought it was cute.

Covington was the only one to transform his well-known songs such as Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" with his Southern-drenched vocals.

Another post-show article at WCNC's site contains a fun quip from a Bucky fan (I won't ruin it for you, but it'll definitely make you smile) and a sweet quote from Bucky about his take on the tour:

"It's everything I ever dreamed of, you know? Being on stage, looking out on 10-15,000 people. You can't explain it," he said.

(Hey, we've been dreaming about it since we first heard that distinctive, lovely raw voice during the semifinals. Nice to know it's a win-win situation, isn't it? Tour all you want, Bucky--we'll be there...)

There are several of yesterday's WCNC video interview links posted on that same page, including one with Bucky.

The fun in Charlotte didn't end with the concert, though--Bucky, Ace, Taylor and Elliott hit the after-show gig at Coyote Joe's in Charlotte, where LMBO rocked the house with Taylor (the "real" Taylor, bluesy and soulful and excellent, according to accounts) singing along for a full set. Later on in the evening, Bucky sang "Superstition", with Ace on backup vocals! (Yes, you can be insanely jealous of everyone who was there--I certainly am. All those guys and LMBO in an intimate club setting? Whoa.) More info, play-by-plays, and lots of company for that envious feeling at MJ's main page, and in her comments section. Photos and videos may turn up as the day goes on--stay tuned...

Just found another play-by-play of the LMBO gig at the Fox boards, too. (Ahhh, sweet torture. If you were there, please let us know all about it.)

(Edited to link to this excellent comment at MJ's blog by a Taylor Hicks fan who was there--she recaps the night beautifully, and ran into Mrs. and Mr. Covington and the Brothers Young on the way out.)

I'll go ahead and post now, but there's lots more to come today--updates later!

  2. You and me both! That must have been amazing. The "real" Taylor Hicks must be incredible...because even the "Idol"-ized Taylor Hicks is a total force to be reckoned with live on stage.

Hmmm...maybe we can get his band to play a gig after the Columbus show? :)
